Gastronomic meal of the French on UNESCO list

Joint communiqué issued by the Ministry for Agriculture, Food, Fisheries, Rural Affairs and Town and Country Planning (Regional Development) and the Ministry for Culture and Communication

The fifth session of the Intergovernmental Committee of the States Parties to the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, meeting in Nairobi in Kenya, has today inscribed the gastronomic meal of the French on the representative list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

President Sarkozy had announced on 23 February 2008, at the opening of the International Agricultural Show, France’s application to UNESCO for the inscription of her gastronomy on UNESCO’s global heritage list. Supporting the initiative of the French heritage and gastronomy mission (MFPCA), chaired by Jean-Robert Pitte, former president [vice-chancellor] of the Sorbonne, President Sarkozy had declared: “Agriculture and the professions which craft it every day are the source of our country’s gastronomic diversity”.

All the ministerial departments involved backed the application, which was prepared by the Ministry for Culture and Communication.

This inscription on the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity entails the implementation of a number of practical measures to ensure the safeguard of the gastronomic meal of the French, particularly with regard to educational support in schools, identification of the constituent elements of this intangible heritage and cultural events. These measures are included in the national food programme presented by the government in September 2010 and will be implemented with all the relevant institutional and private-sector partners.

Bruno Le Maire, Minister for Agriculture, Food, Fisheries, Rural Affairs and Town and Country Planning (Regional Development), and Frédéric Mitterrand, Minister for Culture and Communication, welcome this decision which gives institutional recognition to the great riches of the French food and culinary heritage. The two ministries are working closely together to raise the profile of the food products and culinary know-how, encourage gastronomic tourism in France, and enhance international promotion of France’s food heritage./.
